A Super Superhero Movie

Movie: The Avengers
Contributor: Hunter
Rating: 9/10
I actually went into the theater with pretty low expectations. Don't get me wrong, I was thrilled with the prospect of this movie, but I was afraid that each and every character would simply be too awesome and in the scuffle for on-screen spotlight, good story lines and plot devices would be sacrificed for appearance. Thankfully I was way wrong and left the theater feeling as giddy as a little schoolgirl.

I think it is only fair to write a review by discussing each of the integral heroes in the movie. Here are my initial grades for how each superhero did:

Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man): A-
Chris Evans (Captain America): B-
Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk): A
Chris Hemsworth (Thor): B
Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow): C+
Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye): B-

Downey Jr. maintains his spunky Stark attitude throughout the film, which provides all of us viewers with some great one-liners. By far the most impressive for me was Ruffalo as The Hulk, partially because we have had a long string of bad Hulks in the past and partially because he totally sells the part. Hemsworth and Renner both did what they could despite their hindering roles in the film and passed off a decent performance when they could. Evans seemed a bit artificial to me and I was not convinced by his attempt to "rally the troops" throughout the movie. Lastly, I'm pretty sure Johansson was just there to distract the male viewers from any fault in the development of the story.

Of course, it is usually a good indication that your movie will be successful if Samuel L. Jackson has anything to do with it, and it was interesting seeing Cobie Smulders take a break from the TV business to play a semi-important role in this movie. If you liked any of the super hero movies that preceded this one, then you need to see this movie.
