A Visual Orgasm
Scandalous title, right? Well, my eyeballs were truly grateful for the stimulus they were confronted with while watching this movie. I hope that I can still use the word "orgasm" in an academic sense. If any really smart people are reading this and thinking, "Thaaaaaat's inappropriate," please let me know so I can edit it a little.
Anyways, Ang Lee did an awesome job with this one, no question about it. I think it is very challenging to create a new, unique world within a world we are already familiar with, and Lee does just that; he makes you believe that the world you thought you knew can be capable of untold mystery and splendor. In other words, oooooh pretty colors!
There has been some debate as to what the movie means or what is it trying to convey, but I can't really address that without discussing specific parts of the plot. I can say, however, that the movie does make you think about life and all that junk, which I think can be a good thing from time to time. Much as his Indian predecessor Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), Suraj Sharma jumps into the big-time with a great performance, especially considering half of it was on a small lifeboat. I'm also a fan of the work of Irrfan Khan does a good job as narrator/message revealer and helps really tie the movie together.
If the Oscar field wasn't so strong this past year, Life of Pi may have won a lot more in terms of hardware. It is definitely worth your time to see this movie, and in the meantime, I'll try to think of an effective synonym for orgasm.
