An Improved Sequel
Better how, you ask? First of all, this movie came out with half of the nation's moviegoers ill with Robert Downey Jr. fever. Symptoms include, but are not limited to: strong attraction to witty, arrogant men; anticipation of general and eventual awesomeness; swelling of the joints (but more likely the first two symptoms). Second, in addition to somewhat perplexing mysteries, the movie introduces a cool, new perspective that makes the movie that much more interesting.
Downey Jr. and Jude Law prove once again to be a very good movie duo through the use of dialogue that would perhaps better suit an old, married couple. While the mystery isn't as captivating as the first movie, it still provides a solid veil of suspense for the mild-hearted (like me). Jared Harris makes for a wonderful villain in this film. He portrays the infamous Moriarty with sly cunningness and focused intensity (read: evil mastermind). The final climactic scene of the film is an epic one you do not want to miss.
It's always the thing with these pop culture movies. It is not that it was bad in any way, but would I give it a 9 or a 10? Not right off the bat. As the late Roger Ebert put it, the movie retold a literary classic with an overemphasis on special effects and explosions. So, if you are a viewer that couldn't care less about the dialogue, then this is a movie that is certainly up your alley. If you are a viewer that needs coherent dialogue to be interested in a movie, the writers came through. I suggest you go check it out.
