Braveheart Meets Pixar... Sort Of...
What? Can it be? Hunter rated a Disney/Pixar movie below a 9? Sorry to burst your bubble on this one, but Brave is unfortunately not all it's cracked up to be. I have to say I was even surprised to see that it beat out Wreck-It Ralph for Best Animation this year, but then I again I was a bit biased towards the video game element of that movie. It will also benefit the reader to read the rest of this review with a Scottish accent.
The movie was a wee-bit disappointing, actually. I'm truly a big Billy Connolly fan, and his lines were hands down the funniest in the entire movie. Merida, played by Kelly Macdonald, is a good character for all the young girls around the country to look up to, but it is always difficult to make a movie about the anti-damsel in distress (the last really decent animation to pull that off in my opinion was Mulan). Now, because it is a Pixar film, it's going to be entertaining and fun to watch, especially with the family. But the question remains, why isn't it worthy of a 9 or 10?
I write my reviews with the intention of not giving away any major plot developments, and I don't intend to start now, but the "plot twist" in this movie is not only unexpected, but also deadening. Here was what I was thinking in my head as the twist was taking place: "Wait, is this seriously happening right now? What are they going to do for the rest of the movie? Really? Ugh, okay I guess I'll go with it."
Thank goodness for the Ginger triplets in the movie for saving things from a comedic standpoint, otherwise I would have given it a lower rating. I mean, it did win Best Animation, so you should probably go see it just to say, "I've seen it." You can practice your Scottish accent while you're at it, too.
