"Cute"

Movie: Despicable Me 2
Contributor: Hunter
Rating: 7/10
Despicable Me 2 went the same direction as Cars 2 in that the producers took the most popular character(s) from the first film and made them the center of attention during the second film. The difference here is that Despicable Me 2 was more of a success than Cars 2 in more ways than one. It was generally funnier and the story was much more unique. Of course, that's easy to do when you have your hands full of small, yellow minions.

That's right, the minions stole the show in this film for kids everywhere. Thankfully, there some older adult references made by the minions that made it more enjoyable for people like me. No one else could perform Gru quite like Steve Carell, who did a good job with his voice in this movie. My MVP award, however, goes to Kristen Wiig, who was the source for many comical moments consistently throughout the film. Always love to see SNL cast succeed after their tenure in New York.

There were two things I would have liked to see that would have made the movie great and not just good. First, part of the reason why I liked the first film so much was because of Elsie Kate Fisher's character Agnes. If they would have found some way to integrate her into the film, I think the movie would be a lot more enjoyable for everyone. Second, the story itself felt a bit repeated. The whole concept of superheroes and villains retiring I tend to associate with The Incredibles. I don't want to slam too hard on the story though, because it still retained many unique qualities that gave the movie something special. It just didn't have that "wow" factor, which is difficult to explain until you yourself see the film.

If you like the first film, you will definitely enjoy this one, so I am giving you the green light to go see it in the theaters if you are looking for a nice movie to watch.
