Getting the Heebie-Jeebies...
I resisted watching this movie for the longest time on the premise that it would be too scary for me to watch. It wasn't until I after finishing the movie that I realized I should have said it was too creepy for me to watch. I couldn't really accurately describe how I felt as I approached rather graphic portions of the movie, but it quite simply gave me the heebie-jeebies.
And how could it not? This is by far the most complex role I have ever seen Anthony Hopkins play; it was probably worth three Oscars, not one. It was so impressive to watch him on the screen, which was only enhanced by the decision of Jonathan Demme to interweave the first-person perspective of Jodie Foster throughout the majority of the movie. Sometimes, the segments of creepiness got a little too intense for me to handle whenever violence was thrown in the mix, but I was able to suck it up enough to make it through. A special gold star goes to Ted Levine for his stunningly freakish portrayal of a serial killer.
I think it is implied at this point that I give the movie no more than an 8 for the sake of utter gore and psychological disturbance. I'm not kidding, there are some seriously grotesque things going on here and I strongly caution those who do go in prepared. I know some of you out there aren't phased by that kind of stuff whatsoever, in which case you may applaud this as one of the best movies of all time.
Other than that, it is understandable that this movie is listed in IMDb's Top 250 (currently at #23). If you can handle it, you should give it a shot.
