Good, Not Great

Movie: Safety Not Guaranteed
Contributor: Hunter
Rating: 7/10
Film festival movies can be tricky. Sometimes they are really good, but they can be pretty hit or miss. Plus, you'll get to receive judgment from people that criticize those "hippy, indie" films. I usually enjoy the festival picks, but some of them can be pretty out there. I was pretty excited going into this movie, and I left feeling pretty satisfied. However, as time wore on, I increasingly forgot about the details of the movie and cannot recall too many specifics. I remember the satisfaction and no detail.

Some of the details I do remember include how impressed I was with Mark Duplass' performance. It is hard to pull off the awkward, quirky, creepy dude, but he did a really good job. Not sure I was too convinced with Aubrey Plaza's performance, but then again, she fit the cast type pretty well. What really worked for the movie was the grounding of fantasy in absolute reality. The effect of this wasn't to make Duplass' character seem crazy, but rather to make the unbelievable believable. (Deep, right?)

Like I said, as funny as I remember the movie being, it was forgettable. I do not remember the intricate plot details. The rest of the characters were also less than impressive. Ultimately, you'll vaguely enjoy the movie if you watch it, but you certainly are not missing out on awesome filmmaking if you don't see it.
