It's Creepy, In a Good Way

Movie: Side Effects
Contributor: Hunter
Rating: 8/10
You can even check my contributor page: I do not do thrillers (film not dance). A movie about the unpredictability of drugs was not necessarily something I was excited to see, but after some great comments from some of my friends, I finally manned up. I'm glad I did, because I was never man enough to watch the very manly-looking Rooney Mara in her breakout role. Wow, I can tell this is going to be a very masculine post already.

It's hard to go wrong with Jude Law. He and Mara were both very entertaining to watch as the drama of began to unfold in the movie. Law does an excellent job of portraying a man who simply gets dug into a deeper pit of fear and isolation. Mara, well, she is once again cast in a creepy role that wasn't weird enough to drive me out of the theater. It was also nice to see Catherine Zeta-Jones in a decently important role. (We all remember she's married to Michael Douglas, right? Yeah, the super old dude.) Channing Tatum didn't put on a spectacular performance, but he got the job done.

Personally, I was on the edge of my seat for this one. My girlfriend is a lot better of predicting things than I am, and while she sensed what was coming up in the end, I was totally caught off-gaurd, which made the movie especially entertaining for me. Of course, when you are making a movie about prescription drug companies, you are bound to encounter some subliminal political messages here and there, but this movie did a good job of making sure political statements were few and far between.

This movie should be deserving of a spot on your Netflix queue if it's not there already. Some of you may watch it and go, "Wow, Hunter must be really sensitive, because that wasn't a thriller at all," but cut me some slack, I'm branching out of comfort zone slowly but surely.
