Laymen's Star Trek

Movie: Star Trek Into Darkness
Contributor: Hunter
Rating: 8/10
For those of you unfamiliar with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, be wary about watching it prior to seeing this modern-day version. What I really enjoy about the new Star Trek films is that they are creating a unique identity, founded upon the original series but with an invigorated conceptualization of the future's triumphs and dangers. In other words, the new Star Trek films are awesome and you don't have to be a Star Wars nerd to enjoy them.

The initial success of the movie relates to casting. Both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are quite a team as Kirk and Spock respectively. The rest of the Enterprise crew, outfitted with Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin, sync really well together and create plenty of dramatic and comedic exchanges throughout the duration of the film. Personally, I think Benedict Cumberbatch (as Khan) wins the top acting award in this one. Then again, give any Brit the part of evil, maniacal mastermind, and you are pretty much well on your way to success.

In addition to the acting crew, the graphics were top-notch. (At least, they were a lot better than they were three to four decades ago.) So, why didn't this one garner at least a 9? It was a good, entertaining movie, but drama had to be substituted for creativity in order for the story to work out. That's nothing you can blame on the writers or the directors, that's just the nature of making a movie about the 23rd century. Also, there were some comic relief lines that felt out of place and sort of fuddled up the climactic moments of the film.

Like I said, you don't have to be a Star Trek fan to enjoy these new, high-quality films. On the flip side, if you are a Star Trek nut like me, you'll enjoy the homage this movie pays towards the original series. Very good movie; go check it out.
