Longer Than 500 Days, and Not As Cute
Now, (500) Days of Summer is an incredibly difficult rom-com to topple, but I just couldn't help but compare the two when I went to go see this movie. Jason Segel is always funny in that innocent, dorky way, and Emily Blunt has that English charm about her, but their on-screen chemistry simply cannot compare to Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. That being said, this film has been the most admirable attempt since 2009.
What does the movie got going on? Well, the writers literally gave themselves five years to work with, which allows for a wide variety of story lines and humorous episodes to develop. Because of this, there really is never a dull moment throughout the film; there is always something going on to keep the audience entertained including, but not limited to, crossbows and comedic foot races.
However, as I mentioned before, the movie is lacking chemistry between the two lead characters. It is difficult enough to identify with two strangers falling in love, one being a chef and the other a student-for-life, but it was hard for me to see any connection that could make the movie heartfelt and significant. In addition, the rest of the supporting cast was forgettable and didn't add any excitement to the wide variety of vignettes presented throughout the film.
Bottom line, it's a cute date movie, but nothing worth going too far out of your way to see.
