Not Even Close To the Notebook
How can you watch this movie and not actively compare it to The Notebook? Rachel McAdams will always be remembered for that, which is why she is the obvious pick for this role, but culturally, it's going to be a while before The Notebook is surpassed. Talking about The Vow specifically, it started with a lot of promise, but just didn't seem to breach that deep emotional connection these kind of movies strive for.
This movie came out right around the time Channing Tatum's popularity really began to blossom, and he did pretty well in this movie. Of course, it was nice to see Sam Neill, who most of you will know from Jurassic Park, which was good for a giggle or two from me. It is also encouraging to hear that the movie was based on true events, because it makes the film that much more enjoyable.
The movie started to skid a little bit as things moved along. The premise couldn't really develop beyond the initial problem that is presented at the beginning of the movie. (I'm trying to describe things here without getting too specific and spoiling the movie for you.) Think of it like this: you are watching a movie and something happens in the beginning that sets the tone for the rest of the movie, but when the movie starts to tug along, that tone is not fully realized.
Good date movie, but not much more than that.
