Nuanced Nudity
This was my first NC-17 movie, so as I walked into the theater, I felt like a kid getting to see an R-rated movie for the first time. The film certainly lived up to its name. As the description on the previous page notes, this is a movie about a man with sex addiction and his carefully constructed private life. Accordingly, Michael Fassbender was very naked for many portions of the movie. Beyond that, the movie was a calculated look into the emotional struggle of a man and his addiction.
Fassbender sold it, which was particularly difficult to do because his role did not include much dialogue. This was also the first feature film I saw starring Carey Mulligan who was pretty standard, but not stellar. (She showed a lot of promise in the previews for The Great Gatsby, but I was disappointed there.) The way the movie looked also made it impressive to watch. Everything from the camera angles to the on-screen positioning of the cast made the movie feel intimate and emotionally provoking.
Ultimately, this is a movie about sex, and while I don't feel that takes away from the ability of the film, it was a bit more difficult to attach to. Grand drama was sacrificed for nitty-gritty realism. The lack of dialogue also made the movie slow at times, but it was by no means difficult to follow.
If you have an abhorrent fear of male genitalia, then maybe this isn't the movie for you. It may also be weird to rent a movie with so much graphic content, so I would only watch it with a close group of friends or with your significant other.
