Phoenix is Insanely (Literally) Brilliant
I don't think it's any secret that Joaquin Phoenix is literally a crazy person. One of my friends tried to convince me that it's all an act and that he just does these things in concurrence with the performances he is preparing for; a method actor. However, after watching his reaction to being nominated at the last Academy Awards, there is just no excuse. I don't care if you are "preparing" for a role or not, when you are being recognized, you nod your head in humble appreciation.
That said, this was a great, great movie, and was very underrated when Oscar season rolled around. The acting in this one was top-notch, and reflects very well on the résumés of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. There was a scene, one that I will not get too specific about, that was so good that it literally brought me to tears. This was not because it was sad or depressing. The acting was literally good enough to make me cry. It was crazy awesome.
The story is very interesting as well, set in the early 20th century during a time when modern medical consequences of war still could not be explained by the field at the time. Being the history nerd that I am, period pieces never fail to fascinate me, and this film was no exception. Both the set and costume design were outstanding and extremely convincing. Some viewers might find the subtle commentaries and selective dialogue difficult to follow, but it's really worth it in the end.
I know, I know, it's one of those indie-festival type movies, and you may not be totally sold on the premise, but please take my word for it and go see this movie when you can.
