Psychology Dramatized
For those of you who are not familiar with your earlier 20th century psychological thinkers, it is important to make sure you recognize the names Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, otherwise this movie is going to appear crazy and not make any sense. The 7 I gave this movie is coming from the fact that I already knew who these people were and therefore was able to enjoy the movie better. If you are not interested in psychology, Jung, or Freud, then you can stop reading now.
[cricket chirps] Wow, I wasn't expecting anyone to stick around after that opening. Well, kudos to you! I truly did enjoy this movie. Keira Knightley is always capable of wriggling into very provocative, European parts, and her role in this one is about as provocative as they come. No joke, it's pretty disturbing, but if you put things in the context of psychological study, it makes sense. It was a big year for Michael Fassbender, but it was interesting to see him in a low-key role like this one, and he did pretty well. And, obviously, as the huge Lord of the Rings that I am, I was pleased with Viggo Mortensen's performance.
Now, because the movie was solely focused on the individual psyche and things of that nature, the movie was naturally slow. While there was some compensation with graphic scenes and brisk humor, it wasn't enough to prevent the average viewer from dozing off from time to time. I am not sure how historically accurate the film was, but if it was indeed true to historical events, it would be a great movie to show to adult audiences and classrooms. Otherwise, I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.
