Redford/Newman Shine
It is really difficult for me to give high praising reviews for movies that were released much earlier than the year of my birth. However, I was very impressed with the ability of this movie to transcend generational conventions and appeal to folks such as myself. That was a sophisticated way of saying that this movie was really good.
Where should I start here? I think homage needs to be paid to both Paul Newman and Robert Redford for putting on a spectacular acting performance. Considering the success of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, it made watching this duo's interactions incredibly enjoyable. The support staff of Robert Shaw and Charles Durning made the flow of the story really come to the forefront of the overall viewing experience. The story itself was captivating. I was always enjoy films that keep you guessing what will happen next. To call this movie "predictable" would be outright folly.
I really don't see any reason why you wouldn't enjoy this movie, unless you absolutely must have explosions and sex involved in your viewing experience. The use of Act headers gives the story a firm structure to work with, and the transitions are nearly flawless. I would argue that the only thing holding this film back from the status of perfection was a lack of development in the pseudo-romance that takes place between Redford and Dimitra Arliss. I felt like this plot could have been explored more and thus have given the film an overall completeness about it.
Definitely a movie you need to put on your to-do list!
