[Review] American Hustle
What a great film. If you are looking for a "bang-bang" or "shoot 'em up" movie this isn't that. What it does bring to the table is comedy; some American history from the late 70s; sex; oh, and staring at Amy Adams for a couple hours! I think our very own Hunter Simmons would agree, that some red heads are too darn good looking to turn away from. And like most movies, there is a love story. Not as romantic or lovesick as Titanic or The Notebook, but it's there!
This movie is about conning and hustling one another, and eventually, one big heist. American Hustle captured a lot from the late-70s. The clothes, the music, home appliances, the hair, the inside of homes (like that disgusting olive-green wall paper, and then hung up on the wall is a yellow phone!). It all made my parents laugh hysterically. Jennifer Lawrence kills it again as her portrayal of an estranged wife who smokes and drinks too much. What's nice about seeing to a movie she is in is that she is different in every way from the character of her last film. Whether it is a young girl with a bow killing to survive, an ex-wife, or the mutant Mystique in X-Men; Lawrence is never type-casted. Big-time studio bosses love that when casting an actor. Let me be the first to say it, I have seen the modern day Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence is it.
Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner also star. A few surprise guest stars; it makes an all star cast!
From 1-10 I give this movie an 8 1/2. At some points it gets a little slow where you can run to the concession stand, refill your popcorn bucket or soda and when you come back you can pretty much catch up on what you missed. I am not just a moviegoer but a movie collector and when American Hustle comes to DVD I will be first in line to purchase it!
