Surprisingly Bearable

Movie: Pitch Perfect
Contributor: Hunter
Rating: 7/10
This was another one of those movies that I was not particularly thrilled to go see, but it was literally made bearable in the sense that I went to go see it with people that I really enjoy. I thought that Workaholics' Adam DeVine would be the only thing to salvage this movie for me, but it actually was surprisingly funny and the singing was not annoying or obnoxious in any way. It is basically a Glee satire that both fans and critics can enjoy.

Considering the emphasis on female leads in this movie, it can be easily construed as a chick flick, but Rebel Wilson really saved this movie in terms of humor and preventing things from getting too, well, girly. It was also interesting to see Anna Kendrick in this comedic role. I remember first seeing her in Up in the Air and feeling fairly impressed, and she has come along nicely since then. The rest of the performances were funny but forgettable; nothing special.

Pitfalls? Yeah, this movie has a fair amount. I'm not sure I have ever been to a college campus or have heard of any mainstream a cappella groups as being a major part of campus life, so it is difficult to attach oneself to the story in any effective way. There were a lot of loose ends as the story progressed that were sloppily tied up towards the end of the movie. My last biggest complaint that I have with this movie is subpar love connection between Kendrick and Skylar Astin; just too corny.

The movie is okay, and if you attuned to the pop music of the time, you would probably enjoy it. Don't go too far out of your way though, that will only end in disappointment.
