Tangled On Ice
Let's get one thing straight. If I was rating this movie amongst animation films, my rating would easily be a 9 or a 10. Just as Disney's Tangled did three years ago, Frozen uses spot on humor and breathtaking animation to captivate audiences. Of course, this is not difficult to do when you are as much of a Disney nut as I am, but even for the casual Disney films lover, Frozen is the perfect way to usher in the holiday season.
The movie was casted brilliantly, with Kristen Bell and Josh Gad leading the charge. It was brilliant in the sense that the characters they portrayed were largely reflective of the actors themselves (Bell, an excitable, fun-loving optimist; Gad, a goofy, witty comedian). Special gold stars go to Jonathan Groff and Idina Menzel, but for very different reasons. Groff really helped to encapsulate the humor of the film, especially when teamed up with Gad and Bell as they go on their adventure. His relationship with Sven the Moose was also quite entertaining. Menzel, on the other hand, really tied together the musical aspect of the film. I would recommend checking out the soundtrack, even before seeing the movie, to get a feel for what to expect. The music, in comparison to Tangled, was a cut above, utilizing the bigger, symphonic feel, rather than relying solely on Disney-fied lyrics.
You can't help but draw comparisons to Tangled, and if I had to choose between the two, I would still pick Tangled. Not by much, though. Frozen is unique in that the music is much more of a fanfare and the humor is of a slightly different tone and variety. I usually reserve the third paragraph in my reviews mostly for critique, but there really isn't anything wrong with this movie. The only reason you may not enjoy this movie is if you are unwilling to admit you enjoy cartoons. But, even if that does describe you, you really need to get out and see it. This isn't some ordinary cartoon. I was blown away by the animation. There is no way it doesn't win best animation come Oscar time.
This review might not come as a surprise to those who have seen other reviews so far, but at least let me take the time to confirm that Frozen is a wonderful movie. As soon as humanly possible, go see it in the theaters. 3D is not essential, but certainly may enhance your viewing experience. Also, the digital short at the beginning is very cool, especially for all you Disney fans out there. Don't be late to the theater!
