The Myth Revealed

Movie: Hercules (2014)
Contributor: Elizabeth
Rating: 7/10
The mythical Greek legend of Hercules is a common one adapted into oral plays, Disney cartoons, and now a Dwayne Johnson action flick. Hercules, the myth, is a very strong sword-for-hire with a band of trained soldiers and killers by his side that go on a journey to save a kingdom. Hercules believes that he has killed his family, similar to the legend, and finds the truth of the events that happened in the end. The entire plot brings together mystical legend, comedic action, and sense of “Maybe he really is a demi-god..."

There are many good things about this movie that I was not expecting. "The Rock" has not been known to put out the best quality in terms of acting, but this movie really had it all. Along with actors Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, and John Hurt this movie is made into an overall enjoyable action movie.

There were only a few things that this movie did not do well. The ending did not match the rest of the movie. The plot was a very well thought out and a strategically-placed storyline at the end of the movie left many strings dangling for the audience. The last scene is of Hercules defeating the army by bring down a huge structure. What happened to the band? Did Hercules get the girl? Did they live happily ever after in the kingdom or keep fighting as swords-for-hire? All things that may be safe to assume, but I feel could have been answered and tied up with a 1 minute epilogue.

Overall, the movie was fun and enjoyable. This action title deserves a 7 out of 10 for the amazing twist on a classic legend with a great overall theme of believing in yourself. I would recommend this movie to a group of friends who want a good laugh or to a couple who is tired of romantic comedies for one night. It was a very enjoyable movie that is not suitable for children due to some humor references and select words.
